Mark Costello’s play for young audiences depicts a world where the magic of community overcomes the bleak realities of poverty and drought in a small southwestern city. To serve this, the set had to impose the desperate nature of those circumstances, but also suggest that they were not as solid as they might seem. The shapes and textures of the apartment complex and sun-scorched asphalt provide many opportunities for the more magical elements to enter, creating a synthesis of the imaginative and the mundane.
