The dichotomy in the Givings’ marriage and minds is made physical in her parlor and his medical office, each an imperfect reflection of the other. The soft, warm parlor and the cool, ordered office appear very different, but in the final moments of the play, the physical reality of the house moves away, and the translucent wallpaper becomes a single unit, a place where their boundaries can dissolve.
