The world of Hairspray is a loving homage to the fabulous trashiness of John Waters’ aesthetic and to the pop-art sensibilities of the early 1960s. Drawing on the garish colors and patterns of fabrics, wallpapers, and graphic art of the era, we crafted an abstracted world in which the rapid pace of the scenes could flow smoothly and quickly and the energy and optimism of the piece could shine through.
