On this show, we were trying to create a world that was literally growing out of the stories. We began with units that were very childish, like pop-up books, moved into a warm fairy-tale place, akin to Maxfield Parrish paintings, then travelled through the second act to a place that felt increasingly desolate and haunting, with a feeling of Edward Gorey's style – creepy, lonely, but with a note of dry, dark humor as the characters leave the trappings of fantasy and face the grim realities of their world.
