Qui Nguyen’s energetic homage to 90’s fantasy and nerd culture is a celebration of imagination, creativity, and community. The drab grey shadows of suburbia give way to the vibrant and oversaturated world of fantasy, inspired by early genre artists like the Brothers Hildebrandt. The fluidity of action was facilitated by a pair of slipstages that could travel in and out of the space and
an upstage portal that embodied the emotional heart of Tilly’s imagined world. In the final climactic moments of the play, the sculpted dragon that had been the visual anchor of this spot came to life, roaring and breathing smoke as Agnes is forced to confront her own psyche and do battle with the guilt and anger of her sister’s death.
