Our take on the Edgar Lee Masters poems was a devised piece evolving alongside the spreading pandemic. Deaf and hearing performers created scenes, dance pieces, and new monologues to express and process death, life, and our place in history, which were then composed into a digital performance piece. Throughout the process, the safety of performers and shop personnel were paramount, which meant a lot of simple gestures, remote work, and constant flexibility as circumstances evolved. These challenges enabled us to achieve a kind of visual poetry that was harmoniously in keeping with the text.
